    The Iyasa Language and Culture Summer Camp is a community project whose objectives are to promote, revitalize and document the Iyasa language, culture and customs. As the language and the ethnic group are classified as endangered, we work daily to fight against its programmed extinction.Since 2021, for one month (the month of August), we bring together children and teenagers aged 0 to 20, with the aim of passing on their linguistic and cultural heritage, through purely cultural activities, literacy, games and initiation to customs (culinary arts, plastic arts, traditional dances...etc.).
We also support children's education by handing out school supplies (school bags, notebooks, pens, rulers, pencils…etc.), for we believe that the preservation and documentation of our language depends first and foremost on education. This year we intend to support the education of over 350 Iyasa kids enrolled in Nursery, Primary, secondary, High schools and University, providing them didactic materials.
Our activities
The activities will be for the most part recreational but can be divided into two categories: purely recreational activities so that festival-goers can enjoy their presence in the festival village, but also learning activities. These include
  • Iyasa songs;
  • Dances (Ballets Bantu, Ivanga, playback of Iyasa music);
  • Fishing initiation (Íbútwa, Iyɔbɔ);
  • Storytelling (Likano, Baduwɛ́ Baduwɛ́);
  • Film screening;
  • Excursion to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to discover some tourist sites and some species to be protected (the itinerary will be proposed by the monitors);
  • Competition games in Iyasa;
  • Learning the numbers from 1 to 5000 in Iyasa;
  • Introduction to the Iyasa alphabet;
  • Introduction to writing the Iyasa language;
  • Initiation to the making of pots and crab traps (Bekúlú na Ngóba)
  • Group work (go to the beach to leave the crab traps and come back to get them later: Mangongo);
  • Exchange with parents on the importance of the mother tongue,
  • Gala evening + gift giving to festival goers...etc.
